You just gotta love our Prime Minister. The leader of our country. You have to love him... because otherwise you'd want to go mental and postal.
Case in point. Nortel lays off another 10,000 workers. The bellweather of our national high tech companies. Their stock is in the toilet. Part of the blame is on the crappy Canadian dollar. Part on poor management. Part on really bad work conditions in Canada where the average taxpayer is a slave to the various governments, paying more than half of our annual wages back into various govt coffers.
Chretien is asked his opinion on Nortel and what the government is going to do about this situation. His response? I paraphrase, but not by much: "well, you know, da ting is, you know I feel bad dose people are out of work, but you know, dat is life, and we move on, and you know, the Canadien economy is very strong, our dollar does well against beeg countries like Chine, Russia, you know, it is great, you know...."
Meanwhile, Britain knights two people that have connections to Canada. One was born here but is a British citizen living in the UK for 3+ decades. The other was born in Wales, but now lives in Canada.
Chretien is incensed. He's perturbed. He's completely pissed off. He spends all day writing letters to Tony Blair. He gives dozens of soundbytes to the press. He holds a news conference. He issues more letters. He freaks out. He makes this the first lead story on the newscasts today. "Dey cannot do this outrage!" Chretien sputters. "Dey are Canadien, and only we as a sovereign nation can decide how to scre... uh, how to honoure our citizen. Dey have some nerve!"
Yeah Jonnie Cretin, you have your priorities straight. Sigh. The politicians in this country, the governments, how we (not them) are slaves to the tax system, it all makes me sick.
