I got an email this morning about my previous rant, saying I was far too harsh on Canada and esp. the government.
Somehow I don't think so. I read today's Vancouver Sun and right on the front page, is an editorial: "I'm Sorry, Even if Chretien Isn't" by Pete McMartin.
It seems that Waffle Boy doesn't intend to go to the WTC site like other world leaders, including both the French and British leaders. Chretien's excuse? "I don't want to be a bother". This, after Mayor Guilliani invited Waffle Boy to go down to the site to inspect it, to offer his support and encouragement to the relief workers, and to pay homage to the dead.
McMartin offers different explanations about why Chretien is doing this. He says that maybe Waffle Boy thinks that a visit to NYC would be too warm a hug to the US, or that he's nuts, or that he's an asshole and can't be bothered. But the explanation I agree with is this: Chretien is an old politician who's been playing the game far too long and thinks that he can go through his usual motions on this event, just as if it were any other. In other words, Chretien just thinks this is another political game.
The guy is an idiot.
BTW, I call Chretien Waffle Boy in tribute to his 180 turn on the GST affair, have done so for years. But this tragedy has shown more wafflism. When the attack first occurred, Chretien offered his usual confused, "oh it's terrible" statements. Then in the days afterwards when it looked like the US was prepping for war and expected its allies to offer support - real, human being in position type support, Chretien started his usual waffling. "Well, da ting is, Canadian boys might be hurt, you know..." he said to the press. IMO, Chretien doesn't give one shit about a Canadian "boy" being hurt or killed, he only sees personal dollars here - what will have to be paid out in compensation for a soldier killed in duty. What will have to be paid out to field these soldiers.
