Mondo Volleyball My affliction started with little snippets of my fix during high school gym class. Then, it came from summers at Mooney's Bay. After that, I got a full taste of my addiction from the Hope Tournament. Now, in Vancouver, I get my fix every year, thanks to the JCVC - the Jericho Classic Volleyball Club! I really like volleyball. Really like it a lot. But that doesn't help the fact that I still generally suck at it. Oh, sure, I've had my moments of brilliance (like the time two years ago when I powered a spike right through the hands of two blockers!) but my main problems are sustained elevation, and stamina.Beach volleyball, as you may or may not know, requires a ton of stamina. JCVC plays its summer leagues on grass, which is just fine by me - but our team practices in the Spring down at Jericho and Spanish Banks - in the sand - and that's a sure way to get yourself fit! I don't know if I could last a season playing in sand today, but in my youth, I could manage it. I remember playing vball while on camping trips with friends from high school, then university. We had a ball, literally. Nothing's better than spiking that bottle of Blue outta your friend's hand! While still in my teens, I played in the Hope Volleyball tournament, the world's largest single day volleyball tournament. For a rec-competitive team, we did pretty well one year, advancing to the semis, when we were knocked out by an outstanding team. We won the consolation round, and ended up with 3rd place in our division! Now in Vancouver, we play in a cool league every year, and we play at the B-level competitive skill level. Our games last all summer long, on Sunday afternoons, and we have a blast. We are also looking for new team members this year so if you live in the Kits area, and you're interested, send me some e-mail. The cost is only $45 per person, and you'll get a cool team t-shirt that I'm designing! The league starts in May, so sign up soon! Click here to get to sweat some more. |
