Michael hogs the glory, Mario does the work!Super Speedway...
No... Super Mario!!

open wheel racing gif, lifted from the super speedway site, and modified.

I just saw the OmniMax film, Super Speedway. It blew my mind.

My friends know how much of a auto racing freak I am. I love auto racing so much, I even watch boring racing like Nascar. But for me, the epitome of racing is the premiere open wheel racing organizations: Formula One and IndyCars (now called CART for stupid legal reasons.

So the highlight of my month was going to see Super Speedway, a 45 minute film in OmniMax format. I saw it at Science World in Vancouver, which hosts the biggest ominmax screen in the world. With its huge domed screen, and massive sound system. I got to sit right in the cockpit of an indycar going 230 miles an hour around the Michigan International Speedway. The sound quality was so immense that I could hear, amongst all the engine noises, the tiny split second squeal of a left rear tire momentarily losing its grip. I got to follow the twists and turns of the Nazareth road course, and flow through the streets of Toronto, thanks to Mario's driving.

Because I know a bit about the background of this amazing film, I know that super Mario did just about all the driving when the omnimax camera was attached to the car, though the film gives the impression that Michael did it. Well, he didn't. And they didn't scrub off speed either for the incar camera shots. Mario's ride was a boosted up '94 Lola. They cheated on the car, giving it more horsepower than the average indycar so that Mario could go at real race speeds. When you sit in the cockpit at Michigan, you're going 230 miles an hour. When you take the hairpin at Toronto, you're going from 185 mph down to 40 mph in about 2 seconds.

Jeanette came with me to this showing, and she said I had a goofy, ear to ear grin for the whole thing, and when the incar race sequences happened (there weren't enough of them, IMO), I was absolutely giddy and bouncing in my seat from the excitement. Hmmm maybe I was. I love autoracing, and this omnimax film is probably the closest I'll ever get to doing the real thing. My visit to Science World and the Super Speedway movie was, as Jeanette put it, "better than sex" for me!
