Front Page Rumblings for April April sure zoomed by quickly for me. Here's all my rants for that month. It includes things like buying a Tony Little Gazelle, a tax rant, racism issues, stuff about U2, Dukes of Hazzard memories, Super speedways and even rants about radio, television, travel, and more! Speedjump to May 97 Archives Wednesday, April 30 Well, the tax deadline is near. Canadians have to file by midnight tonight. So I'm going to rant. I don't like my country much, or the way it's run. I'm not some militia freak or anything, but did you know that the average Canadian works for the government for half the year? That's right. the average "tax free" day in Canada is around June 30th - which means that every dime you make up to June 30th is paid in some sort of tax throughout the year. It is a sickening statistic. Everything is taxed, and there are even taxes on taxes! 80% of booze prices are tax. 70% of our gas prices are tax. Today, I'm reading the paper, about the new $200 coin the Canadian Mint issued - it features Haida art. The mint is selling it for $475 or so, plus taxes. The government is charging a tax on legal tender! And if you think we get the social benefits for these taxes, think again. Health Care isn't free. We pay $38 a month here in BC for our carecards. We still have to pay for things like ambulances (which is also taxed as a service), medication (which is taxed) and we pay a portion of the cost when visiting a specialist like a chiropractor. We can only see our eye doctor once every 2 years, and we're only allowed one prescription per visit, so if you want a prescription for eyeglasses and contact lenses, we have to pay. This country really sucks sometimes. Tuesday, April 29 I got my Tony Little Gazelle today from Purolator delivery! I just finished my first workout with it after assembling it (easy), familiarizing myself with it (easy), warming up (gotta get more graceful!) and then doing the 10 minute beginner level exercises. Boy am I outta shape... but you know what? I like the machine. It is fun to use. It takes a bit of time to get good on it, but it is fun! The ten minutes, listening to Tony's rants, went by quickly, and after I warmed down, did I feel it in my legs and arms. It's far to early for me to recommend the thing, say it works, etc., but I definitely feel like I've been through a workout. And here's your link for the day - Tony Little's own website! As a secondary note, I am in the midst of redesigning my company web site, and I am looking for comments. I don't want to post the temporary URL just yet, as it's still very experimental, but if you would like to give me your comments about it, e-mail me and I'll send you the URL. I need some more feedback, because I sent out about 8 messages to online friends to review the design for me, but only 3 have written back. Hrmph! Nice friends! :-) Monday, April 28 Well I did it. I bought a Tony Little Gazelle. What the hell. It's got a 60 day money back thingie, so I did it. Laughing starts today, you're allowed. Today's been very busy for me. I met with a new client this morning, and this afternoon, I'm busy updating my company page. It should be live in a few days. I also found some more potential work through some contacts, so that's good. Money may be evil, but it's sure good to have. I'm getting frustrated with e-mail. It seems like I lost a few posts this weekend again, and I didn't get a single F1 update, but I found it was because my service was cancelled due to bounced messages from JP's server a couple of weeks ago. Or maybe people are writing less, what with exams and the like? Oh and before I forget, there's a new story, which was online just yesterday. Daily Linkage - Some personal pages today. The first one is Arachnid, who is into goth and a very talented graphic designer. The second one is Rebecca, who shows exactly how big one's ego can get - she even has her own FAQ, for christ's sake. Sorry girl, you ain't all that. Sunday, April 27 Please help me. I'm about to succumb to the Shopping Channel and Tony Little. For the past two days, I've been watching snippets of him and his Tony Little Gazelle walker - the one that you "float" on. I'm about to give in, to break down. It looks so damned fun! And if even half of what he says is true, it should burn off the inches. Any negative experiences? Am I crazy? Tell me quick before I blow $300 on it. Yesterday was a U2 marathon day on Much Music. We had U2 spotlights, we had the film Rattle and Hum, we had interviews, and we had a sneak peak at Pop Mart. It got me thinking about U2 and how the band has affected my life. I used to be a huge U2 fan. So I wrote a story about it, called Feeling U2, and it's live, so check it out. Daily Linkage - I can't believe how many U2 sites there are, and how many visits they've had. Most of the fan pages I checked out had on average 40K-60K visitors each! Well, I won't add to that. But PopMart has it's own web page, so check it out for the latest official info about U2. Saturday, April 26 I said it before. This month is going by too fast. It's weird. Anyway, I am barely over my Dukes of Hazzard Reunion fix from TV last night. Also, I watched Nash Bridges, which seemed more like a Miami Vice meets Cheech and Chong show, since both Tubbs and Chong were on it last night. I've been noticing lately that the Internet is just like a soap opera. I was witness to several rather childish fights over the past week (thankfully, I wasn't part of them this time around), On of my online acquaintances felt that he was the victim of some pretty harsh accusations, and he took his fight to the web, to newsgroups, and to e-mail. He even went so far as to cc: all his mail to his accuser to all his other online friends. I found the whole thing laughable, especially considering that the topic of the argument was insignificant and easily forgettable (I've already forgotten it). As the Net Turns, eh? Daily Linkage - I found a few cool sites to share with you today. Check out TeeVee, home of the critical, cynical, and sometimes funny television review. There's the Cool vs. Practical article at theNet site, and for some rants against McDonalds (hey, I luv McDicks!) check this one out. Friday, April 25 Ever have that kind of day where you feel like sitting and being a vegetable? I'm having that day today. I was going to try and update my company page today, but couldn't motivate myself. I could barely get myself to update this page. It's a blah day for sure, and I don't feel like doing anything, even going out. I just want to sit and vegetate. I found out there is a Dukes of Hazard reunion show on TV tonight (CBS 8pm). When I was a kid, I was a HUGE Dukes of Hazard fan... "Just two good ole' boys, never meaning no harm!". I used to love those unbelievable jumps! Did you ever notice that the General Lee's front end crunches during the show's intro song? They cut it quick, but you can see it. Anyway, I'm going to watch it tonight, just to have a laugh. I know Uncle Jessie is still alive - I saw him last year, and he looks EXACTLY the same! Daily Linkage - Some Dukage Links today! Lots of personal fan sites. Probably the best one, with lots of content is Ray's page. A few others: Cory's Page, Brandon's pages, (both lame, but with pictures). And probably the definitive site for Duke Fans is The Dukes of Hazard Homepage, only because it has so much content, and is fairly well designed. Thursday, April 24 Kind of a boring day today, punctuated by a few e-mails from my favourite net people. I did some cleanup on this site, and updated the Sweat page, so check it out if you want. I'm going to go night riding the trails tonight, but I need my bike tuned soon. Any good, cheap bike tuners in Vancouver? My new story has been up at O L I O for a few days now, and I've gotten a few e-mails about it. Mostly good, one person thought I was an idiot. Oh well, can't satisfy everyone. It is controversial. But if you want to read something less uppity but full of thought provocations, check this sneak preview out. It goes live in a week or so. I am also doing a long overdue revision of the WriteDesign page, and my extreme alpha is here if you want to look. Daily Linkage - I read an interesting story at news.com today about software licenses. Also, for those of you who loved Aldus, oops, Adobe Magazine, check out their online version. Wednesday, April 23 Today is my brother Mike's Birthday. He's 23 today, which makes it an extra special weird day. Happy Birthday Mike!
Daily Linkage - My piece is live at O L I O, and it's called I Hate. Since it's my brother's birthday, here's his favourite site: Origin Games. And, here's a few Mario links The Motor Sports Hall of Fame (of course he's in there), and the ultimate Indycar site. Tuesday, April 22 Another busy day, and a disturbing one. I spent most of the morning pouring over racist, anti-racist and other hate related sites, looking for images and themes. I was sick to my stomach... Why, you may be thinking. Well, my first independently published story will be going live on O L I O tomorrow, when they change the entire look of the site. It's a story about hate. It's still sort of a work in progress, but if you want a sneak peak, it's here. I was originally going to use typical hate graphics, but decided not to... no need to show yet another swastika. In the end, I think I got my feelings across, and while they may disturb some, at least they are from the heart. Daily Linkage - Once more: O L I O a great site by a fellow Canadian. And in tune with my mood today, here's a few anti-racist and anti-hate sites to check out. There's the Simon Wiesenthal Center, a place for holocaust remembrance. And, there's HateWatch. Visit their site to find out some very interesting information about the Net's worst spammer. Just one more reason to despise this guy. Monday, April 21 Sorry, this is very late today (as if anyone cares! :-)) Anyway, it's been a very busy day for me. I spent most of it working on other people's sites, writing up a few new stories, reworking a few others and buying stuff,. I'll let you know why later this week. It's been a great weekend for me, overall. I got some e-mail from the incredible Drue yesterday, and a fair amount of e-mail from new people, which always makes my day. I also have a line on a new job, so that makes me happy. I finished up my story for OLIO, which will go live sometime next week or the week after. And today, I went shopping for a new guitar, and I spent all afternoon with the boys, The Hip! Hoo boy... ok, it was a good weekend for me, maybe not you! Daily Linkage - Gotta feature it again - O L I O a great site by a fellow Canadian. Also today, here's a few cool personal pages you might like: There's Angeline, and Elly, and the Monkeyboy! Oh, and of course, I can't leave out the irrepressible Zannah! Sunday, April 20 Today, I'm generally a happy guy. I was invited to write a story for an online ezine, and that really made my day yesterday. I don't think my writings are all that, but I guess it's nice to hear that people like the entertainment value, if nothing else, of my rants. I have also completed on of the last parts of this site, well, sorta. The Creation of Yet details how I built this site, what tools I used, and where I got my info from. I wanted to include tips and tricks, but the page is so long, I left that out for now. Also new pages to note include my baby pictures, completed Ultra Personal links, and hey, no one's answering my online survey these days. Satisfy my lust for feedback willya? Daily Linkage - One of the better e-zines dedicated to rants and writings is O L I O a great site by a fellow Canadian. Another favourite is SPEW. And, for something completely different, I found a page written by an extremely intelligent budgie! Visit them, love them, worship them! Saturday, April 19 The news today is a new page - speshul kind of page. The other day, I found a bunch of pictures I thought were lost in our last move - my baby pictures! So I scanned them and wrote up some descriptions, and put them here. Don't forget, Ultra Personal is now complete. Other news. I'm stopping the use of the bolded text. I've had three negative comments about them, so they're on the way out. Unless you like them? Well, Jean is still pissed at her sister, and I don't blame her. Oh yeah, last night I watched her eat about 2 pounds of shrimp, all by herself! She stopped off in Steveston and bought the shrimp from one of the boats. She cooked up one big pot of them, ate them all, and then cooked up another pot and ate some more! And later, she felt sick... I warned her, but she wouldn't listen! Linkage: Today, I'm featuring a how to make fonts site, by the Chankster, and Drue's Turning 30, a little story by one of the coolest writers on the net. Enjoy! Friday, April 18 Damn, this month is whizzing by. Anyways, in case you haven't noticed yet, I completed my Ultra Personal section links, adding the last two pages yesterday. Check them out. A lot is on my mind today, but I can't really talk about most of it. For instance, in the net-geek world, I have a potentially embarassing and damaging photo of an online friend, but I can't show it! My laser printer blew up today, which is bad, but it's still under warrantee, so that's good. Jeanette's sister was being a complete bitch to Jeanette last night, which is bad. But Jean and I got to spend some quality time together, so that's good. Basically, I'm having an Even-Steven kind of day. We'll see how it goes. Link-o-da-moment. Having problems with your 28.8+ faxmodem? Check out Dvorak's rant from back in February, and maybe you can fix it. Do you secretly want to use Javascript, when you actually tell everyone you think it's lame? Here's the site for you. Just ignore all the lame push bannerverts. Thursday, April 17 I purposely kept this section short because I sometimes have tendency to ramble on. That's why this is called my rumblings section, not ramblings. But today, there's a lot I want to talk about... I guess I'll just have to pick one topic. Racists and their evil spews have been on my brain all morning. I was sifting through some posts last night in usenet, and came across some thinly disguised racist rants that really disturbed me. A few days ago, I was talking about how great the net is, and today, I don't think like that. When evil, hateful people get such a worldwide forum to spew out their hate, then the net isn't such a good thing. And this is a real twisted thing for me, because I am a fervent supporter of freedom of speech on the net. I have taken usenet stands in the past against censorship of content in certain newsgroups (like van.general) so what to do about the racists? Well, known ones to me (like the pseudo-person Karen Gordon) are added to my killfile, and I recommend to others they do the same. This kind of self censorship means that people like Karen Gordon will lose part or all of their little sounding board for their internet racist rants. It's a start, and it's not much, but I don't know what else to do, other than help educate. Oh well, it's a long one today, there's no room for links o' the day, and my columns look all messy. What can you do? Wednesday, April 16 The news today is a new section. I added 4 new things to this site, so I ditched the links from the main page and main navigation bars (don't worry, they're still here), and added a miscellaneous section. Inside this section you'll find links, a how-to/tools section, a lame survey form, and the archive for the rants from right here. I got 4 survey responses since I put it up yesterday! Everyone seems to like these daily rants, and the updated stories, so I will continue this. One person said he doesn't like my use of bolded text in this site (kind of a style I settled on), and another person feels this site doesn't have enough flash. What do you think? Give me your comments - I value them greatly! Sites of the Day -- Today feature is web resources for creating better web pages. First off, there's the Ultimate Web Publisher's Guide, a site with little content, but a ton of links. I'm still trying to figure out Photoshop, and the PC Resources for Photoshop is a great help. Lastly, there's Sulivan's Scanning Resources, for help with scanning images for the web. Tuesday, April 15 I did something today that shows how cool the net can be. I was listening to Seatle's The End radio station, via cable, and they were interviewing a singer I knew a net friend from Seattle really liked. So I e-mailed her, and she got to hear it, including a very hip accoustic version of the song she really likes. Neato stuff. One thing I really like about the net is Real Audio. I hear radio stations from around the world, and when I travel, I can listen to some Vancouver stations. Also, there are Vancouver newspapers online, so when I travel, I can catch up on the latest news. Compare this to 1990. When I went to Europe, it was a struggle to find Canadian news. My only source was a 2+ day old Globe and Mail, found only in major cities, after an exhaustive search. The Net changes this! Sites of the Day -- Vancouver media on the net. First, there's the Vancouver Sun, the serious paper, and the Vancouver Province, the lame one. Also, there's a few radio stations online, including CKNW - all talk and news, CFOX - rock n roll, and CFMI - classic rock. Monday, April 14 Part 2 Well, it's been a rather shitty day, all things considered. First, a client backed out of a project. Second, I had to wade through 230 e-mails today, including over 15 spams. Third, I lost on several of my e-mail chats, I guess folks are too busy during the week! And fourth, I'm coming down with a bad cold. Oh well. Short thought for the day. When you're paid to be creative, sometimes one of the most difficult things to do is be creative. I have one project where I have to create a logo, and for the last 4 days, my mind has been blank when it comes to creating this damned thing. I haven't a clue what I want to do with it. Oh well (again!) Sites of the Day -- a neat little JavaScript site I found over the weekend, or how about Drue's Page... she writes for various magazines, including The Net, and Wired. Oh, forgot - here's your internal link to something inside here. Monday, April 14 Welcome to my little spot on the web! Today, I haven't really written anything new. I was too busy with e-mail. Today, I woke up, did the old S/S/S thing, and checked e-mail... over 230 messages! Hmm. Guess they fixed the e-mail router. But I know I'm still missing messages - some test messages I sent myself aren't there. I hate e-mail problems. Lessee... what's up for today. Well, I have to work on a few images, fix a few pages for a client... basically I'm bored to hell. I need something to do, so tell you what. If you're someone I know, and you need some small thing done for your web page, then write to me, tell me what you need, and if I can do it, I will, but just today! Sites of the Day -- a neat little JavaScript site I found over the weekend, or how about Drue's Page... you probably know her - she writes for various magazines, including The Net, Wired, as well as ezines. Oh, forgot - here's your internal link to something inside here. April 13, 1997 Welcome! Today, I wrote a new story, griped some more, and I added a new section for all my old rambles that fill this spot and the spot to the right. As always, I enjoy reading your comments! ARGH!! Three days now, with only a trickle of e-mail!! It's frustrating, because I had about 6 different conversations going, now zip. This really sucks. So if you're reading this, and have sent me e-mail in the last few days, send it again to markp@mortimer.com. Jacques Villeneuve won his second GP race today in Argentina. I got a lot of work done. It was sunny, but now it's raining, but I don't mind. I also wrote a new story today. It's about the walk I take my dog on every night. Wait... before you roll your eyes, it's not what you think. Check it out. Today, I also started an archive for my past rumblings that fill this spot. Sites of the Day -- Here's a couple of cool Formula One sites. There's Atlas F1, which is an e-zine, and Gale Force F1, which is filled with stats, but they also operate a cool facts/stats only mailing list. April 12, 1997 Welcome to my slighly weird web place. I'm toying with the idea of adding a chat component. What do you think? Also, a new section has been added, an archive for my old stories. Two days now, without e-mail. Well, I'm getting about 10% the e-mail I normally do. Our server was upgraded (an oxymoron) on Friday, leaving it with more problems than before. If you're trying to e-mail me, send it to send it here, at least until Monday. Don't forget, there's now 4 new stories here - read them, love them, criticise them! Oh, another thing, I bought a new CD today, Alice in Chains MTV Unplugged. I'm not a big AiC fan, but I really liked the sound of this CD, and now I'm enjoying the accoustic renditions of all their thrash songs.... heh heh heh, cool... this is cool... heh heh shut up Beavis! Sites of the Day A few people have asked me how to make animated gifs. Well, BAD is what you need - a site sent to me by my buddy Shawn.
