They Define Cool

Lately, I've been reflecting on what's cool on the net. Getting a CoolSighting award made me think about it more. I don't think my site is "cool" per se, but it is an experiment ground for me in my commercial ventures, and it's also a hobby, much like someone who builds model trains, or someone who collects comic books. Below, you'll find the things on the net that I think are truly cool. This list will change periodically, but the really cool things never do.

Zannah stares!Zannah .web.brat.
Zannah is cool without really knowing it. She doesn't have the ego some people on the net seem to have, which in itself is very cool. Zannah found me first, and I'm forever thankful. She's easily one of my favorite net friends. She puts a lot of work into her web site as well, and though she's into some ultra geek things (sorry Z.!) that I'm not into, we share a lot of interests. I don't think I know anyone online who is easier to talk to.

Alexis Massie
Alexis is one of the writers I admire the most on the net. She used to run PBoT, but folded it to start up AfterDinner, one of my favourite writing sites on the net. Recently, I began a dialogue with Alexis, and she turns out to be even more bright and worldly than I thought she was (which was a lot). Very cool person.

Jen Worden
Jen runs O L I O, which is another online writing magazine. She also gave me my first crack at published writing (I have two stories at OLIO, one called I Hate, and the other Lost Friends). But she isn't cool because of this. Nope, Jen is cool because she has a quirky, down home sense that comes across great on the web, and makes you feel like you know her, makes you want to pop by, have a coffee, and shoot the shit. I hope to do it in real life one day!

The Tragically Hip
The Hip define hip for me. These guys had a web page up before it was "cool" to have a web page. This band is distinctly Canadian, and they write songs that are as important to the Canadian identity as Pierre Burton's books are. Plus they sound awesome. They recently did a site redesign, to coincide with their latest album, Live Between Us. Too cool for words, these guys.

Adam Rakunas
Just in case you feel I only think webwomen are cool, check out Adam. Adam is cool. He's an excellent writer, part of the new breed (at least, the new breed as I see it). Adam knows mountain bikes. Adam knows site design. Adam knows visual arts. Adam is a fellow geocities SoHo neighbour, which in itself is very cool. As a net friend told me once, "Adam rocks".

ComoFlow
Comoflow, with it's no-nonsense design, is extreme cool. It features all the unique, zany and amazing things that make the Net so great for me. Comoflow features the parts of the Net that are expressive, artistic, fun, sad, and above all, personal. Very cool stuff.

The Fray
The fray was the first writing / reflection e-zine I ever read with regularity on the web. It's one of those standards-setters. It features two way input, making all the readers part of the story, which is cool. Anyone can be a writer on the web, thanks to the fray, and that's what makes it so cool.

ProjectCool
There are only a few sites that I visit every day, and this is one of them. A showcase for cutting edge design, amazing content and more, ProjectCool is the source on the net for both aspiring and seasoned webmeisters and graphic designers. I feel very honored to be part of ProjectCool, but they aren't cool because of that. They are cool because, well, they are!

Museum of Unnatural History
This site is cool simply because there's nothing else like it on the web. I'm pretty sure Jeanie M., the site's proprietor, is possessed, but if roadkill art is the thing for you, check it out.
